Burnout of your best people is a widespread reality in corporate America today. The reason is
simple – Your top performers (Your Top 20% who gets 80% of the work done) are always selected to pick up the heavy load.
This is occurring because many of today’s leaders are
not holding the bottom 20% & middle 60% employees
accountable to do their work. For those leaders who have the
Top 20% working for you, I have a secret to share…these
individuals are looking for new jobs. It’s not a matter of IF
they are leaving, it’s a matter of WHEN.
Here are a few ideas to keep them enthusiastically engaged and not looking for other roles outside of your company:
- Implement consistent monthly one on ones. Focus growing and developing their leadership, management, and coaching skills.
Give them challenging assignments. - Groom them to be your successor.
- Allow them to fill in for you at key meetings: Providing them with some exposure to what
your job looks like will give them a good idea of what they can expect. - Make your word your bond. Do not over promise and under deliver.
- Send them to the best conferences and get them the premier training/coaching. Invest in
them! - Anticipate their desires and requirements, proactively staying one step ahead to
consistently demonstrate genuine caring for both their family and career. - Assist them in crafting comprehensive plans for the next five, ten, fifteen, and twenty years.
Serving as a dedicated mentor throughout their journey. - Create an environment where they can express their humanity, embracing them
wholeheartedly for their authentic selves, free from any expectation to function like a
machine. - Show them how the future looks as a team!
- Work hard to get them promoted, an increase in salary, a better title, etc.
- Role model a full life to them which includes health, family, and business.
- Show them how to create win-win results through collaboration.
- Demonstrate your thinking of them by your ideas, recommendations, solutions and actions
towards them. - Force them to take time off and cover for them.
Use these ideas to energize your Top 20% individuals. They will react with a highly positive response to them. Their desire is to remain in your company; all it takes is to provide them with the positive attention they rightfully deserve today.
Appreciate the Day,
