You Get What You Coach!

You get what you coach is such a simple statement. It’s so basic and easy to comprehend.

Great coaches are great communicators. They inform their direct reports exactly what they expect. As it relates to the end results, the why it needs to be done and a general understanding of the framework of the “How” it can be achieved.

A consistent successful coach embracing the role of transparent communicator is paramount. It’s essential to maintain an open line of dialogue, ensuring that each team member is fully aware of their standing in regard to the expectations set forth. Far too many leaders, unfortunately, fall short in sustaining this flow of information, despite the clear desire for it among their teams. When you prioritize this level of clarity and consistency in communication, you not only uphold the standards of successful leadership, but you also foster an environment of trust and engagement within your team. 

Teams provided with clear directions tend to be highly proactive. Proper follow-up reinforces this by ensuring that the team remains aligned and on track. This combination fosters a dynamic work environment where productivity thrives.

Here are a few descriptions of how you can spot these highly proactive teams:

–       A culture of getting things done

–       Never complaining or giving excuses

–       Everyone is supporting each other – They know someone has their back!

–       Each person on the team knows they represent the whole team. Acting with humility and courage.

–       The energy they produce is:

–       High

–       Positive

–       Truthful

–       Respectful

–       Having fun doing the work: The workplace buzzes with the sounds of laughter and friendly joking, a clear sign of a positive and enjoyable atmosphere. It’s a setting where humor and light-hearted banter are welcomed, fostering a collaborative and uplifting environment.

There are many ways to demonstrate to your team what you expect of them. Here is a list of essential activities designed to deliver feedback that individuals can effectively apply and act upon:

Team Meetings – Enhance team meetings by transforming them into educational sessions that provide members with innovative ideas, practical solutions, and efficient methods to accomplish their tasks. This approach not only informs but also empowers the team to perform their roles effectively.

Huddles – They are important gatherings that are timely and impactful. They act like a lightning rod giving everyone more confidence and energy to be successful. The data you are sharing during these huddles are very timely and important for the team to succeed.

Monthly 1:1s – These sessions should be dedicated to growing and developing individuals behaviors and habits. These 30-60 minutes should open the floodgates to proactively challenge each individual to step up their game. If you’re in a confluent, trusting, and honest relationship with them they will be giving you as the coach many channels to grow them. Don’t hesitate. Do it!

The purpose of this one-on-one meeting is neither to address administrative matters nor to concentrate on specific project details. You have set up a culture of no fear, where you are confluent with each other allowing both parties the space to tell the truth without fear of vaporizing the relationship. As a coach, you establish the principle that actions speak louder than words, and you foster an environment where everyone agrees that holding individuals accountable for their behaviors is both expected and respected. This is where the rubber meets the road and individual growth and development happens. The bi-product is the coach and the individual have unwavering loyalty to each other.

Self Reflection Moments – Role model having self reflection moments where you create Proactive Strategic Adjustments that positively change your actions. Let them see you go the extra mile for the company’s benefit. To effectively inspire the individuals you coach, it is essential to first exhibit your own capacity for transformation. Leadership is not just about instructing others; it is also about leading by example. When you demonstrate a willingness to adapt your own behavior, you pave the way for a smoother journey, encouraging individuals to embrace change willingly. This approach lays the foundation for a ‘follow the leader’ dynamic, wherein your actions serve as a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth among those you coach.

Belief in them! Show them how to go beyond where they are today by believing in themselves. Let them help you create the future of the company. This activity equals empowerment and great coaches know their people are allowed on the field of play; Not the coaches. The primary responsibility of a coach is to articulate the team’s vision clearly, provide comprehensive training to each member, ensure everyone understands their individual roles, and equip them with the necessary skills to perform their role effectively. Then the coach lets them go to release their potential energy and imagination. In the end, the coach knows it takes the entire team to achieve consistent success.
