BE AN EXCELLENT COMMUNICATOR

In today’s world, when everything is moving so fast, it really pays to be an excellent communicator. You need this skill, whether you are a leader, manager, coach, mother, father, influencer, friend, etc. What makes this skill so important is that we have so little time to do it.

With all this said, here are a few ways to maximize the time you have when communicating:

  1. Think before you speak. What is the message you want to deliver? Picture the individuals/teams you are addressing telling you that they are comprehending what you are saying.
  2. Talk to people in their language, not yours. Be aware of those with whom you are communicating and understand their world. Adjust your approach accordingly- talk their language.
    1. Find common bonds
    2. Use words they can relate to
    3. Attach your words to support them in achieving their goals, wants, and desires
    4. Help them reduce and eliminate their immediate and long term challenges
    5. Make it easy for your audience to understand you
  3. Watch their face and body language. Are they saying “We got it!” (open body language, smiling), or “We reject it.” (closed body language, not paying attention, communicating to you “I heard enough”)
  4. Understand when it’s the “right time” to communicate. Don’t expect people to always be willing and ready to accept what you are going to say
  5. Deliver the message clearly and with respect. Say as little as possible with the most impact. When soliciting support on motivating others to action, explain why your information is important.
  6. Confirm that the message was understood by asking for feedback. See if you can help them to internally process the information you just shared. Only when your information is accepted by others will it be acted upon. This means individuals have internally connected your message to supporting them achieving their goals. Therefore, don’t rush others, let them take their time to make your words theirs.
  7. Always remember that excellent communicators are excellent listeners. That’s why we have two ears and one mouth. Relax, take a breath, and focus on what they are saying. Look inside their words and find their true meaning. What is their sense of conviction and belief that are filling their words.
  8. Before each upcoming meeting answers these questions to maximize everyone’s time:
    1. With whom do you want to communicate?
    2. What do you want to say?
    3. When is the best time to reach the person?
    4. How can you approach them so that they are focused and interested?
    5. Why is your message important?

I trust all of you can slow down to get ahead, especially in the area of communication.

BREATHE | FOCUS | LISTEN | SPEAK
