What Will Your Leadership Message Be?
September 27, 2018
By Mark David
A client of mine, who happens to be an excellent divisional leader, recently inherited a new region. He didn’t have a lot of time to get them up to speed, as he’d done in the past with the other regions in his division, and in an effort to get everyone on the same page, he created a five point leadership message that he emailed out prior to his meetings in his new region.
He shared his email with me and I thought many of you could benefit from his wisdom. His message cut through all the noise and clutter and resonated with the majority of his new reports.
This is what he shared with them:
- Look in the mirror, the buck stops here.
- You will find what you’re looking for if you look hard enough.
- Follow your passion – are you elated in what you’re doing?
- Without the will to succeed, all the skills won’t be enough
- The little details count.
These five leadership points were perfect for this divisional leader. It described him perfectly and people were able to relate to how he thinks and acts.
Now, think about your direct reports, and all the individuals that role up to you directly or indirectly, and let these five leadership points be the catalyst for you to come up with your own that will allow your reports, clients, indirect reports, upper management, etc. to have greater loyalty to you and your vision.
Use June as the beginning of your mid-year adjustment. Create a message of five powerful leadership points that give everyone who receives it, greater belief in themselves because they are aligned with you.
I look forward to learning what five leadership points you choose to share and the positive impact it makes for those on your team. Make your push now to close out 2018 as strong as you can!
Remember….no one is coming.
